Wohlbefinden - Die WHO-Chefin ist weiterhin optimistisch, dass ein Konsens zur Bewältigung der globalen Gesundheitskrise erzielt werden kann.
Tedros Apologizes for Failed Pandemic Agreement, Remains Hopeful
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), has apologized for the temporary failure of the planned pandemic agreement. Despite this setback, he remains optimistic, as countries have shown their willingness to reach an accord. During the start of the 77th WHO Annual Meeting in Geneva on Monday, he said, "Everyone knows multilateralism isn't easy, but it's essential." Tedros believes that the 194 member states will still reach a consensus. This agreement was supposed to be a highlight of the meeting.
Concerns Over Scarce Items During Pandemics
Despite the optimism, concerns over the distribution of scarce items during pandemics, such as protective gear, medications, and vaccines, persisted until the very end. The gathering is now deciding on the continuation of the negotiations. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) was also present at the event.
"All for Health - Health for All"
The meeting is taking place with the motto "All for Health - Health for All." The goal is for participants to outline guidelines for WHO priorities in the next four years. This is the highest decision-making body for the organization. Tedros emphasized that there are 4.5 billion people globally who don't have stable access to healthcare. He intends to ensure that every sick, injured, or pregnant person can receive prompt treatment, even if it means receiving treatment nearby.
Addressing Malaria and Antibiotic-Resistant Viruses
Malaria and the concerning rise of antibiotic-resistant organisms will also be discussed at the conference.
Learning from the Coronavirus Pandemic
We should learn from the lessons of the coronavirus pandemic. A reform of the International Health Regulations (IHR) is progressing well and should be adopted soon, as these are mandatory rules and commitments for member states in response to health threats. They help prevent or manage the spread of diseases internationally. This involves things like monitoring diseases and instantly informing the WHO about unusual events.
More Clarity in Health Emergencies
The WHO can currently declare a "public health emergency of international concern" as the highest alert level. The word pandemic is currently missing from these health regulations. This is intended to change. Furthermore, it should be routinely verified how member states implement their obligations to prepare for crises.
