- 17-year-old teenager missing in Danube since Friday
Search for a missing 17-year-old teenager in the Danube in Ulm has been suspended again. A police spokesperson said that on Monday they will assess what further search measures would be sensible. The current is still very strong in the flowing water. In the morning, a helicopter was used for the search, the spokesperson said. Now, they need to evaluate what search measures would still be useful, the spokesperson added. Witness interviews will also continue.
Rescue forces reported "zero visibility". The Iller is carrying a lot of sediment water into the Danube, said Oliver Bernsau of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG). Since Friday afternoon, police, fire department, and DLRG have been searching for the teenager. The age and gender of the missing person were only released by the police on Sunday afternoon. There was a third search operation in the morning with a helicopter, which was also suspended.
Teen tried to swim from Ulm to Neu-Ulm
The 17-year-old, according to police, tried to swim across the Danube from Ulm to Neu-Ulm on Friday afternoon with several other men. He reportedly went underwater multiple times due to the strong current, and the other men couldn't help him.
Witnesses reportedly saw the person go under. The teenager was last seen in the water near the Herdbrucke. Search efforts continue.
Sonar device detects human body
DLRG was on the river with boats and divers. A human body was seen on a sonar device, the spokesperson said. However, the search had to be suspended on Friday evening due to the strong current. Every sighting on the sonar device is only a snapshot, the DLRG spokesperson explained, as the body could have already drifted away by the time divers reach the spot.
On Saturday morning, police searched the banks by helicopter without success. In the afternoon, DLRG deployed a boat again. Many onlookers watched the search operation, a dpa photographer reported. Due to a thunderstorm, they took shelter under the bridge where DLRG was operating. Many water sports enthusiasts were already back on the water with inflatable boats or stand-up paddleboards.
The teenager's attempted swim was from Ulm to Neu-Ulm.To resume the search for the missing teenager, authorities will consider suitable measures in Ulm on Monday.
