Before the European Championship quarter-finals - Aigner: State parliament speeches in a soccer shirt "quite conceivable"

Deputies in football kit at the podium? The President of the Bavarian State Parliament, Ilse Aigner, is open to the idea due to the growing Euro championship excitement. "In tracksuit it's hard for me to imagine – but in combination with a suit, jacket or blazer, it's thinkable", said the CSU politician to radio station "Antenne Bayern".

The Euro championship and the promotion of sports in Bavaria have been topics in the state parliament recently "and they can also be visual", said Aigner. "However, the deputies must still uphold the dignity of the House."

There are no explicit clothing regulations for deputies or visitors in the house rules of the Bavarian State Parliament. However, respect for the dignity of the House and consideration for the work in the House is required in one's own conduct in the Maximilianeum.

North Rhine-Westphalia allows it beforehand

Previously, the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament in Düsseldorf had clarified that deputies could appear there on Friday before the Euro championship quarter-final match between Germany and Spain (kick-off: 18.00 hours) in their football kit. However, during a speech they must wear a jacket or blazer over it, according to a Landtag spokesperson. The spokesperson for the CDU state parliament fraction's sports policy, Jens-Peter Nettekoven, announced that they intended to use this opportunity on Friday in the plenary session.

There is no scheduled full plenary session in the Bavarian State Parliament on Friday.

  1. Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian State Parliament, suggested the idea of deputies wearing soccer jerseys during full plenary sessions, inspired by the growing enthusiasm for the European Football Championship.
  2. In response to a radio station's question, Aigner, a CSU politician, acknowledged that she finds it challenging to picture deputies in tracksuits but finds the idea more plausible when combined with a suit, jacket, or blazer.
  3. Aigner mentioned that the Euro championship and the promotion of sports in Bavaria have been key topics in the state parliament and emphasized the importance of maintaining the parliament's dignity while incorporating visual elements.
  4. The spokesperson for the CDU state parliament fraction's sports policy in North Rhine-Westphalia revealed that deputies would be allowed to appear in their soccer jerseys during the plenary session preceding Germany's quarter-final match against Spain at the European Football Championship.
  5. Deputies in North Rhine-Westphalia were instructed to wear a jacket or blazer over their soccer jerseys during speeches, ensuring that dignity and respect for the parliament's work remain a priority.
  6. As of now, there is no scheduled full plenary session in the Bavarian State Parliament on the same day as Germany's Euro championship quarter-final match against Spain.
  7. With the upcoming European Football Championship, there is an increased interest in incorporating soccer-related fashion and promotions in various political arenas, including state parliament sessions in Germany.
