Pelosi, Clooney - also Schumer? Caution for Biden wavers

Biden was supposed to shine at the NATO summit. But the debate over his political future overshadows everything. And the criticism comes from increasingly prominent figures.

US election campaign - Pelosi, Clooney - also Schumer? Caution for Biden wavers

At times, silence is louder than words: Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refused to clearly state whether President Joe Biden will remain in the presidential race during a TV interview. Instead, she urged the 81-year-old to make a decision about his candidacy. Pelosi's subtle distancing from Biden weighs heavily and echoes. She is just the latest example of the hesitance for Biden within the party. Even some of Biden's wealthy supporters in Hollywood have lost patience.

Report: Schumer considers Biden alternative

The situation for Biden in Washington is heating up. Senator Peter Welch publicly called on Biden to withdraw. According to a report, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also shown openness to supporters about replacing Biden. Axios reported this based on two unnamed sources. Publicly, Schumer has remained unwavering in his support for Biden. The public opinion of another Biden supporter came beforehand with the force of a thunderclap: Hollywood star George Clooney wrote in the "New York Times" that he no longer believed in Biden's candidacy and called for him to withdraw.

Should Schumer take such a public stance against Biden, Biden could finally lose the support of the Congress. Then, the fate of Biden's candidacy would be sealed. Pelosi's words are a slap in the face for Biden. She is not only a close confidant of Biden but also a powerful figure in the Democratic Party.

Pelosi puts Biden under pressure

In the "Morning Joe" show, reportedly Biden's favorite political morning talk show, the 84-year-old Pelosi said, "It's up to the president to decide if he runs." She added, "We all encourage him to make this decision. Time is running out." Upon the moderator's comment that Biden had apparently already decided to stay in the race, Pelosi evaded the question.

Instead, she countered, "He is loved, he is respected, and people want him to make this decision." Pelosi had previously stood firmly behind Biden after his TV debate debacle against Republican challenger Donald Trump. However, in the past week, Pelosi raised doubts and said it was a "legitimate question" whether Biden's stumble in the TV debate was "just an episode or a condition."

Pelosi, 84, is not the youngest herself. She is running for re-election in the US House of Representatives in November. Senator John Fetterman, who supports Biden, reacted surprised to Pelosi's recent statements. "It's decided. It's strange that she says that." Hours after Pelosi's interview, another representative spoke out against Biden.

Biden fights to save his campaign

Biden is currently fighting to save his campaign for the November presidential election. In the United States, there is debate over whether Biden, due to his advanced age, is the right presidential candidate for the Democrats. Biden has been facing increasing questions about his mental fitness following his disastrous TV debate performance against Trump. Biden reacts to criticism stubbornly and sometimes angrily, refusing to withdraw from the race.

A journalist asked Nancy Pelosi if she still supports Biden's presidency campaign, which Biden answered with a clenched fist at the NATO summit. This incident occurred when the leaders of the 32 NATO countries gathered for a family photo. Biden's self-confident response caused quite a stir, especially from Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was standing right behind him, resulting in a smirk.

The important summit of the NATO alliance should currently be demanding Biden's full attention in the US capital, Washington. However, the unrest in his party is equally preoccupying him.

Journalist interviews Biden

No critical mass of Democrats have opposed Biden yet. However, doubts persist, and new withdrawal demands keep coming every day. Today, Biden faces a grilling from the Democrats: The closing press conference of the NATO summit. There, he must answer the press questions without a teleprompter. Biden has a tendency to promise and stumble in such situations.

Biden has also announced a new TV interview to demonstrate that he can handle questions without a prompt. On Monday evening (German night to Tuesday), he will face the questions of NBC journalist Lester Holt. Last week, Biden gave his first interview to the network ABC and emphasized that only God could move him to withdraw.

The journalist who interviewed Biden was George Stephanopoulos - ironically, it was he who made a provocative statement. In a video, the journalist in New York is seen saying that Biden cannot serve for four more years. "I answered a question from a passerby earlier. I shouldn't have done that," quoted US media Stephanopoulos' spokesperson.

Clooney counts Biden out

Actor George Clooney expressed his scathing opinion about Biden in an opinion piece in the "New York Times." The 63-year-old directly called on the US president to withdraw from the race. A battle he cannot win is the fight against time, Clooney stated. Successful filmmaker and producer Rob Reiner ("When Harry Met Sally") joined Clooney and wrote: "Democracy is facing an existential threat. We need someone younger who can step back. Joe Biden must make way." Biden is supported by various stars - Hollywood is generally considered liberal.

Clooney had only recently collected millions in campaign donations for Biden's campaign at a fundraising event in Los Angeles with other stars like Julia Roberts. Biden had traveled directly from the G7 summit in Italy to Hollywood to participate in the glamorous event. In his article, the actor wrote: "He was the same man we all saw at the debate."

  1. The New York Times published a report questioning President Joe Biden's re-election bid, with Senator Chuck Schumer reportedly considering alternative candidates.
  2. The uncertainty surrounding Biden's candidacy has extended to Hollywood, with George Clooney openly expressing his lack of faith in Biden's ability to win.
  3. The silence from the government on Biden's future has contributed to the growing sense of unease, with Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi refusing to publicly endorse his re-election.
  4. The US Senate is also reportedly considering replacements for Biden, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer privately discussing the issue according to unnamed sources.
  5. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing US election campaign, with Joe Biden facing criticism for his performance in TV debates and questions about his mental fitness.
  6. Biden's response to criticism has been stubborn, refusing to withdraw from the race despite calls from some Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi.
  7. The upcoming US Election 2024 is shaping up to be a contentious race, with the future of the Democratic party hanging in the balance with Biden's potential withdrawal.
  8. The NATO Summit provided an unexpected distraction for Biden, with a journalist stating that he cannot serve for four more years and Biden's angry response causing a stir.
  9. The situation in New York is also a cause for concern, with Biden's political morning talk show, "Morning Joe," reporting doubts about his candidacy from democratic heavyweight Nancy Pelosi.
