Poinsettia season begins in the north

The poinsettia season is slowly beginning in Schleswig-Holstein. According to the Chamber of Agriculture, smaller plants that can also be used as table decorations are becoming more popular. In terms of colors, red still dominates with a share of more than 80 percent. However, combinations of warm colors such as brown, green and beige with white and shades of grey are also in vogue, the Chamber announced on Thursday.

According to the information, white or pink poinsettias often take center stage in the nurseries at the beginning of the season. Autumnal shades such as salmon, cinnamon or apricot are also on offer. The colors go well with autumnal pumpkin decorations.

According to figures from Statistikamt Nord, 26 nurseries in Schleswig-Holstein recently produced around 433,000 poinsettias a year. The focus is on the Segeberg district, which accounts for three quarters of the total quantity. According to the Chamber of Agriculture, production today requires significantly less energy than it did 20 years ago. The plants can manage with less heat. This year, the bright and warm September also had a positive effect. The poinsettias' bracts take on their color as soon as there is undisturbed darkness at night for ten to twelve weeks.

Producers in Schleswig-Holstein are currently preparing their plants for sale and transporting them to the stores via short routes, according to the Chamber of Agriculture.

Customs officers closely monitor flower imports during the poinsettia season to ensure compliance with import regulations. The popularity of Poinsettias in local customs is evident, as around 433,000 plants are produced annually in Schleswig-Holstein's nurseries.
