Europe-wide search - Thriller in Italy: Police arrest the meltdown killer
Ten days the police searched Europe for an Italian man who had murdered and cremated his uncle. He was finally arrested. The 39-year-old surrendered to the police at his house in Soiano del Garda, Upper Italy, as reported by the authorities. The exact circumstances were initially unclear.
Giacomo B. was sentenced to life imprisonment three times for the murder of his uncle Mario B. in October 2015 in an upper Italian community in the family-owned foundry. The victim, a 50-year-old businessman, had arranged for dinner with his wife just a few minutes before his disappearance. Since then, there has been no trace of him.
Despite the sentences, the 39-year-old, who always maintained his innocence, remained at large. After he disappeared, he was sought with an international arrest warrant. His girlfriend and son returned to Italy by train from France a few days after the sentence – without him. The girlfriend claimed to have lost her memory.
In custody, the convicted nephew had not served a single day. He never confessed. In the trial, he claimed to have loved his uncle. However, the courts came to a unanimous verdict that Giacomo B. was the murderer. He had harbored "obstinate and unbreakable hatred" towards his uncle, according to the justice department, because he believed the uncle had been embezzling money behind the backs of the rest of the family. He had saved his uncle's number under the name "Asshole" in his phone.
Criticism of Italian authorities
The nephew transported the corpse of the victim, according to the investigation, immediately after the crime with the help of two workers into the oven. One of the two was found dead six days later in a forest. He had swallowed a cyanide capsule – presumably suicide. In his house, the investigators discovered 5000 Euro in cash, possibly a reward. An accusation of murder assistance is expected to be raised against the other worker, according to a report by the Rai television broadcaster.
Apart from the usual interest in such a manhunt, there is increasing criticism of the authorities because the man was able to remain free throughout the entire time and apparently no one thought he could avoid imprisonment at the final sentence. Another uncle, Andrea Rozzini, commented briefly on this: "He had nine years to prepare all of this." The authorities justify themselves by stating that the defendant had always appeared for court dates.
The attempted murder assistance charge will likely be brought against the remaining worker, as reported by Rai television. This individual, like Giacomo B., had close ties to Italy, having returned to the country by train from France shortly after Giacomo's sentencing.
The crime scene, according to the investigation, was Lake Garda, where the nephew allegedly cremated his uncle's body with the assistance of two accomplices. One of these accomplices tragically passed away, possibly due to suicide, shortly after the incident.
Despite facing multiple life sentences in various European countries for his crimes, Giacomo B. managed to evade justice and remain at large, fueling criticism against the Italian authorities for their handling of the case.
